Jackie managed The Shack Youth Outreach for a decade. She is dedicated to helping local youth with social, work, legal and interpersonal issues. She has become a friend and parental figure to myself and many others over the years. Jackie is passionate about youth and assisting them in reaching their potential.

The Shack Youth Outreach

The Shack Youth Outreach is a youth drop-in centre located in Epping NSW, behind St Alban’s Church. The youth centre is named “The Shack,” alluding to humble beginnings as makeshift Shack for local youth to gather. Having since evolved, the current youth centre is a standalone building with facilities including, computers, internet access, bathrooms, lounge, television, a pool table, kitchen with utilities and food donated from local businesses. They offer youth and family support services as well as counselling.

Skytrek the mural was a piece I put together for The Shack. Jackie gave me free reign after installing a blank canvas over what was previously a brick wall. The piece reflects the spirit of the youth centre being a hideaway gem visible only to the Shack patrons and those who walk by.

The trompe l’oeil piece, echos a secret pathway hidden in the wall, presenting those who pass by an entry point to a surreal dream world. The artwork was created to inspire the youth, provoke curiosity and hopefully stop and converse with the youth at The Shack.
